Cut one strand
Cut one long strand of embroidery floss. Fold the strand exactly in half so the two loose ends meet. The folded end will become your loop.
One of our favorite ways to start a new thread! The loop method gives you a neat, secure beginning without tying a knot on the back of your work.
This method is perfect when your pattern calls for 2 strands of embroidery floss. You'll use one longer strand, fold it in half, and the fold creates the loop that anchors your first stitch.

Take the two loose ends and thread them together through the eye of your tapestry needle. The loop should remain at the opposite end of the floss.
Bring your needle from the back of the frame to the front through the first hole of your stitch. Leave the folded loop hanging loose on the back.
Go down through the diagonally opposite hole to create your first half-stitch. On the back, pass your needle through the loop you left behind. Pull gently until the loop closes around the thread.
Bring your needle back up through the next corner and stitch diagonally across your first half-stitch. Your first X is complete — and your floss is secure with no knot!
The loop method works beautifully when you're stitching with two strands. Instead of starting with two separate strands, use one strand twice as long and fold it in half. Easy, tidy, and no starting knot needed.
Once the loop is secured, continue following your pattern just like you would with traditional cross stitch.
